Child Passenger Safety
- Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children aged 3 to 14 years of age.
- The Massachusetts State Child Passenger Safety Seat law states a child must be in a federally approved Child Passenger Safety (CPS) restraint that is properly fastened and secured until age 8 OR 57” tall.
The UMass Memorial Child Passenger Safety Program educates parents and care givers on the proper use of a child passenger safety seat as well as the use of seatbelts and avoidance of driving distractions. Certified car safety technicians are available at safety checkpoints to inspect car seats and their fit and to teach families about how to install seats properly.
In addition, the program provides car seats to families in financial need who are referred to the program through other agencies.
