Provost/Dean and Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School

Terence Flotte, MD, currently is the Provost/Dean and Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor at UMass Chan Medical School, with faculty appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and the Horae Gene Therapy Center. Dr. Flotte is a pediatric pulmonologist and has been the principal investigator of multiple clinical gene therapy trials, including the first-ever human use of AAV vectors, a trial in cystic fibrosis patients that began in 1995, and recent trials in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and Tay-Sachs disease. His research has been continuously NIH funded since 1993.  Since 2015, he has also been Editor-in-Chief of his field’s oldest journal family, Human Gene Therapy.

“I have been on the Medical Group Board in one form or the other since 2007. In my role as Dean of UMass Chan Medical School, it is my responsibility to jointly oversee the chairs of all of the clinical academic departments and support their success and the success of all of the faculty, particularly with regard to their education and research missions, as well as to maximizing the wellness all members of the Medical Group. 

I have been so impressed by the accomplishments of the faculty physicians of our medical group, as they provide outstanding patient care and accomplish so much in education and research. Their response to the pandemic has been nothing short of amazing. After seeing this, I am confident that there is no challenge too great for this group of physicians to overcome.”
