WORCESTER, Mass. – UMass Memorial Medical Center was named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics, an IBM company. This is the 18th year of the study which singles out 50 hospitals that achieved superior clinical, operational and financial performance in this critical area of cardiovascular care.
As is the case with the Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® study, the rigorous processes used to calculate and measure hospital service lines leverage public data sources and risk-adjusted methodologies developed and maintained by Truven Health scientists over many years.
According to John Keaney, MD, medical director of the Heart and Vascular Center, and chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, “The UMass Memorial Heart and Vascular Center has a proven track record of superior results, and we have the region’s most extensive resources for managing all types of heart and vascular disease. We demand excellence in everything we do. It’s why our Medical Center is among the best hospitals in New England for heart attack survival and one of the top heart programs nationwide for coronary artery bypass and aortic valve surgery.”
UMass Memorial Medical Center has received numerous recognitions and accolades from organizations including US News and World Report, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Heart Association, Consumer Reports and Becker’s Hospital Review.
The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study measures performance in key performance areas:
- risk-adjusted mortality
- risk-adjusted complications
- core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care)
- percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use
- 30-day mortality rates
- 30-day readmission rates
- severity-adjusted average length of stay
- wage- and severity-adjusted average cost
To determine the 50 top U.S. hospitals for heart care, Truven Health researchers analyzed Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, Medicare cost reports, and the Hospital Compare dataset published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The study, and subsequent analysis of the positive variances these leading cardiovascular service hospitals show, indicate an opportunity for a broader national impact for cardiovascular patients, should these results be replicated. In fact, if all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners:
- More than 9,000 additional lives could be saved
- Over 6,000 more heart patients could be complication-free
- More than $1.4 billion could be saved
That analysis is based on the Medicare patients included in this study. If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.
About the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals Report and the 100 Top Hospitals Program
The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study is available at 100tophospitals.com. It is published once a year in November.
The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals program which was initiated in 1993, uses independent and objective research to guide hospital and health system performance. Organizations do not apply or pay for this honor, or pay to promote their award. Award-winning hospitals and health systems prove that better care is possible and provide an example for other organizations to follow across the industry. The 100 Top Hospitals award winners demonstrate top performance on both how patients are cared for through clinical measures and how the hospital performs as an efficient business. The 100 Top Hospitals report is published annually in March and is available at 100tophospitals.com.
