Weight Center Programs in Central Massachusetts
UMass Memorial Medical Center provides weight loss management and information through both surgical and lifestyle-based (nonsurgical) tracks. Our Weight Center team will help you determine which option will work best for you.
- Surgery is generally considered for a select group of patients with body mass index (BMI) greater than 40, or 35 if patients have certain associated medical conditions. A BMI of more than 40 corresponds with being about 100 pounds overweight. Pre- and post-surgical appointments with our medical, nutritional and behavioral specialists help you make a lifelong commitment to improved health. UMass Memorial offers gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding surgery, and sleeve gastrectomy.
- Also called the Custom Track, this program promotes weight loss through lifestyle changes focused on nutrition and exercise. The program is designed individually to suit your needs, taking into account any medical issues, physical limitations and special weight loss goals (such as weight loss before joint replacement surgery). After a free orientation meeting, you attend one-on-one and small group meetings with professionals in medicine, psychology, exercise physiology and nutrition. Through individual and group sessions, you will learn the diet and exercise skills you need for successful weight loss and, just as importantly, long-term weight loss maintenance.
Questions about coverage? Insurance companies vary greatly in what they cover and what you must do before enrolling in a program or scheduling surgery. We have a helpful checklist of questions to ask when speaking with your insurance company about coverage, deductibles and copays for weight-loss services and surgery. And if you're not sure, contact us. We've helped more than 4,000 people reach their weight-loss goals, so we've worked with nearly every insurance company--we've probably worked with yours, too.
