Emergency Mental Health

If you’re experiencing a mental health emergency, UMass Memorial Medical Center will assist you in accessing the most appropriate mental health team as quickly as possible.

We offer you telephone crisis intervention, psychiatric evaluations and crisis stabilization 24 hours a day. During your emergency you’ll be evaluated by a team of nurses, social workers, mental health counselors, psychiatric residents and attending physicians.

If you’re a person in crisis, call our triage telephone line at 866-549-2142. Emergency mental health services are supported through contracts with private and public payers and are available to you regardless of your insurance or ability to pay.

Mental Health Evaluation and Referral

For your convenience a 24-hour emergency mental health screening service is available for patients of all ages. Your emergency psychiatry services are evaluative in nature and designed to create an accurate diagnosis, provide brief intervention when appropriate, and establish follow-up care either in the community or through inpatient care. These services can be provided at the Emergency Department on our University Campus or our evaluation team can travel to other community sites.

Crisis Stabilization Services

We also offer you a short-term residential service if it’s determined you don’t need inpatient hospitalization but you could benefit from a brief (one to three days) residential placement. This program allows you to stabilize, identify causes of your crisis and develop effective discharge treatment plans.
