Cochlear Implant Program

Cochlear Implant ExamIf you, your child or love one is seeking increased access to sound, look no further than UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Our Cochlear Implant Program brings together the skills of many health care professionals to help each patient create an individualized plan to correct hearing loss for adults and children. For added confidence, our program is one of the most comprehensive cochlear implant centers in New England and the only one in Central Massachusetts. We serve patients from as far away as Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut and New York.

What Is a Cochlear Implant?

Cochlear implant surgery involves placing a device that helps reverse nerve-related hearing loss. It electrically stimulates the hearing nerve and can treat hearing loss that doesn’t respond to hearing aids.

Cochlear Implant Program for Adults

Adults participating in the Cochlear Implant Program receive the following services as part of their care:

  • Comprehensive evaluation
  • Consultation/choice of cochlear implant
  • Individualized aural habilitation (develop listening skills)
  • Assistive device evaluation and employer in service

We encourage family members to participate in all aspects of the cochlear implant process. Family participation provides support for cochlear implant recipients and allows family members to share the joy and success of new or renewed hearing with their loved ones.

Cochlear Implant Program for Children

Our Cochlear Implant Program for children provides complete services to meet the listening, speech and language, and academic needs of children who hear with cochlear implants. The program offers:

  • Comprehensive evaluation
  • Pre-implant training
  • Consultation/choice of cochlear implant
  • Individualized aural habilitation and educational support services

Staff from the Medical Center cochlear implant team, the child’s school and outside agencies work together to deliver a comprehensive and individualized program designed for each child. Parents are involved in each aspect of the program as active participants and decision makers to support their child’s care.
