Our Research

The physicians at UMass Memorial’s Eye Center are actively engaged in innovative research projects in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School. Our aim is to better understand the diseases that cause blindness to develop new treatments to prevent vision loss and restore eyesight.

This means that you benefit from the very latest diagnostic and treatment options for eye diseases that come from this research.

Through our partnership with UMass Chan Medical School, we perform basic and clinical research and clinical trials:

  • Basic research: Non-human research which may expand our knowledge of how and why eye diseases occur and lead to developing new treatments.
  • Clinical research: Involves human subjects and expands our knowledge of the causes of eye diseases, why they progress and explores new mechanisms that lead to new treatments
  • Clinical trials: Experimental studies in which patients are randomized to determine the effectiveness and safety of new medications, procedures or medical devices to treat a condition
