Benign breast issues, plastic and reconstructive surgery

UMass Memorial Medical Center offers a collaborative team of physicians dedicated to the care of women with breast disease—including cancer, benign tumors, fibrocystic breast disease and more. Our breast surgeons and reconstructive surgeons work with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other specialists in our Cancer Center of Excellence and are with you every step of the way, from diagnosis through treatment, surgery and reconstruction.  In addition to Worcester, we also offer breast surgery care at our convenient community site: UMass Memorial at Southborough, located at 28 Newton Street, Southborough.

Our Comprehensive Breast Center is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, part of the American College of Surgeons. This important recognition means that you get a complete range of high-quality, technologically advanced surgical and medical services for the diagnosis and treatment of breast disorders and breast cancer, all in a warm and supportive environment.

We also offer elective cosmetic breast surgery through our Cosmetic Surgery Center

Breast Cancer Surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center

Surgeons of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery are wholly dedicated to the care of patients with benign and malignant tumors, including those of the breast. Our surgical oncologists are focused on eliminating cancer in each patient and in our community, through individualized treatment programs as well as research and clinical trials.

Our multi-specialty team works with each patient to develop an individual treatment plan to ensure the most effective, thorough cancer care. We explain the benefits of every surgical option such as:

  • lumpectomy
  • mastectomy—partial or radical
  • the removal of lymph nodes
  • breast conserving surgery
  • image-guided breast surgery
  • minimally invasive surgery

UMass Memorial’s High-Risk Breast Cancer Program cares for and counsels women with a family history or other risk factors for breast cancer.  The program offers the region’s only specialized program to help identify and monitor women at high risk for developing breast cancer so we can act quickly and aggressively if cancer does begin to develop.

In partnership with the UMass Memorial Cancer Center of Excellence, we also offer clinical trials in surgery through the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School.

Reconstructive and Cosmetic Breast Surgery

The Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons at UMass Memorial provide skillful reconstruction of the breast following surgery for breast cancer and other breast disease, as well as reconstructive surgery after trauma or significant weight loss. Our Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, who are also part of the UMass Memorial Cosmetic Surgery Center, have years of experience in helping patients rebuild their bodies and regain their confidence.

Our surgeons consult with each patient about her medical treatment plan and her wishes for reconstruction following treatment. There are two main options for reconstruction that help patients achieve a natural look and feel:

  • Implant reconstruction in which a saline or silicone-filled prosthetic form is implanted under the chest muscle to recreate the look and feel of the breast.
  • Tissue flap reconstruction in which a section of tissue from your abdomen, buttock, thigh or back is used to rebuild the breast.

We offer cosmetic breast surgery including breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift, as well as other contouring procedures, in our Cosmetic Surgery Center.
