The Duddie Massad Emergency and Trauma Center, located at UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus in Worcester, cares for the most severely injured patients. As the region’s only Level I Trauma Center, the trauma team is available 24/7 for patients in need of complex, critical care including:

  • Resuscitation
  • Triage
  • Surgical care
  • Intensive and acute hospital care
  • Rehabilitation

Unmatched Experience and Resources

Our trauma center has been verified as a Level I trauma center by the American College of Surgeons since 1987. This means you get a depth of experience and a higher standard of care when you need it most, including:

  • 24/7 coverage by in-house trauma and general surgery, as well as neurosurgery, orthopedics, plastics and pediatric care
  • Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit for the highest level of treatment for patients with brain injuries
  • Designated trauma nurse practitioners
  • Specialized trauma ICU nurses
  • Trauma care coordinators
  • Advanced practice critical care nurse clinicians

We are fully equipped to respond to the most critical medical emergencies from the time of injury through discharge and rehabilitation. Our resources include:

  • Rapid transport via ambulance and Life Flight, the region’s only air ambulance
  • Dedicated shock trauma bays, operating rooms and imaging suites
  • Standby elevator for immediate access to our operating suites and our cardiac catheterization services
  • Trauma ICU
  • ICU step-down unit
  • Inpatient rehabilitation
